  • Follow a piece of gold and silver from being mined to being used. (Consider asking: Who mined it? How was it transported? How was it worked? What was it used for?)

  • Follow maize from origin (planting) to destination (either a meal or a ceremony).

  • Imagine a spy on the edge of the empire and follow the spy’s message to the king.

  • What crimes were punished most severely? Why?

  • What languages were spoken? Are they still spoken?

  • How did the empire deal with conquered people?

  • How much freedom did an individual have? Was there any social mobility?

  • Who had power and how was it exercised?

  • What kind of education did a young person have?

  • Describe funeral and burials. Take a point of view of the people involved. Who died? Who is grieving?

  • How was property inherited? How did people get wealthy?

  • Take the point of view of a captive and warrior. What does each see, feel want?

  • What did people eat? How did they get their food?
